Langley Community Hospital Foundation’s (LCHHF) 33rd annual signature fundraiser gala, Electric Gala, raised funds towards their $1.1 million goal to purchase two new digital x-ray machines at Langley Memorial Hospital. For this project, their team reached out for the design of print materials.
LCHHF had envisioned the Electric Gala with a dark, modern, and neon look to represent the energy and excitement for the community’s shared goal. However, they encountered early challenges in their initial brand concept and in achieving vivid neon colours in their printed invitations.
While following the theme, event logo, and invitation as references, I was commissioned to elevate the visual identity, create cohesive prints for brand recognition, and coordinate with a print house to fulfill the vivid, colourful vision (Hemlock Printers for 350 program booklets, Foundation’s sponsor for signage).
I was responsible for designing the 16-page event program booklet featuring sponsor ads, signage for gala activities and wayfinding, as well as recognition pieces for corporate sponsors, including a sign, presentation slide, and thank-you advertisement.
To ensure a cohesive and intentional design, I researched similar events and aesthetics, curated a moodboard, then presented my concept for review and approval before moving forward with the layouts.
Adobe Photoshop was used for editing images, Illustrator for graphic elements (gradients, shapes) and InDesign for layouts. Ensuring that the designs would be appropriate for a corporate, black-tie event, I prioritized a dark coloured background with strong contrast to set a luxurious tone.
The design was paired with a geometric sans serif typeface for clean, legible headers and angled linear flow patterns to evoke a dynamic, energized feel. Neon effects and gradients were incorporated to replicate the glow of lights and allude to x-ray scans as part of the fundraiser’s cause.
I was excited to be entrusted with designing materials for the Foundation’s first gala under their updated brand. This project allowed me to learn the process of preparing my first booklet and manage moving parts such as deliverables, timelines, and submissions, all while ensuring high-quality work from design to print. It was a valuable experience in my design career and an honour to contribute to such a meaningful cause.
